At War with Germany
Last night on August 4th, 1914, the British Government signed and passed a Declaration of War against the Country of Germany. After Germany belligerently refused the ultimatum given to them to vacate the neutral Country of Belgium by midnight of August 3rd, 1914. The Germans attacked the people of Belgium to avoid being attacked by the surrounding forces of Russia and France, while executing what they call Schlieffen Plan. This plan is designed to play off the Russian’s lack of speed in mobilizing their army by attacking France fast and hard with all of the Germans forces before the Russians are able to make it to the border of Germany. All of these events erupted of the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
The city streets of London are filled with cheer and joy as the Government has full support of their people with men from all over the country rushing to enlist. “ It will make for good stories and allow me to protect my family and country all while seeing new parts of the world” said one of the men waiting in the recruitment line soon after the announcement of the Declaration. Our army’s numbers are currently estimated to be 150,00 men strong. However, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener states we need an army of about 1 million men and the war is said to last anywhere from half a year to a year and a half. Overall the people of England seem to fully support the decision made about the Declaration and this is shown by the growing numbers of men enlisted. “The troops will be home before the snow falls” said Prime Minister Herbert who seems to also fully support and believe in our troops. Support, enthusiastic enlistees and patriotic citizens, half of the battle is already won.
Is it Worth the Risk ?
The citizens of Britain seem all for the war. However, some people may hold concerns such as”What if we lose?” “Will the war be kept on the battlefield?” and “What if I lose my only son?” These many questions are being neglected at the moment by most due to the uproar created by the passing of the Declaration of War against Germany. However, as a concerned mother and a active contributor to society, I demand answers on such topics. How will life change on the home front? And will the people have to step up or lose anything here? How will our life change? Also, is it worth losing your sons’ life over a fight that wasn't ours to begin with? Although enlisting is a noble thing to do, is our Government just boasting with their estimations on the troops early return home. What if the Germans take the war to our home front? They already obliterated the Belgians and they were flagged as neutral and not to be attacked. Who says they won't play against the rules again just because we have declared war on them. Personally I don't think the war is worth it and although our estimated chances of winning our high, it doesn't mean casualties won’t be had. I believe the chances this war goes against the odd on a fight that wasn't ours to begin with are just too great and I believe it is in the best interest of our Government and Empire to decide against the war.
